Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announced a new program Wednesday
that will promote the study and understanding of American art.
The Tyson Scholars of American Art program will help researchers utilize the museum's permanent collection and library to advance knowledge of American art. The Tyson family and Tyson foods donated $5 million for the program, which includes an award for people who have dedicated their careers to American art.
John Tyson says the gift will help bring American art up to where it belongs, alongside other artists that receive more attention.
"There's a little bit of a hole in American art type research," Tyson says. "(There's) a lot of research in a lot of the other areas... contemporary art, modern art, European art, but here in America it seems like we don't concentrate on what makes America great, great American artists."
The first three scholars have already been chosen, and will receive a stipend and live in Bentonville while working on their research.
