The issue of safety and teen sexting is now being tackled by some Arkansas lawmakers. A task force is trying to figure out how to deal with kids who make or send sexually explicit material on the internet or cells phones. State lawmakers were debating whether to make it a misdemeanor if a juvenile gets caught with sexually explicit pictures of themselves or others but they scrapped that idea. Instead, the task force will try and figure out ways to teach kids not to post or send such images online.
Free health tests start Monday in Northwest Arkansas. It's called the Walgreens "Way to Well" health tour. Folks 18 and older can receive free health tests and vouchers for free flu shots at the Walgreens on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Fayetteville and West Walnut Street in Rogers. The testing only takes about 20 minutes and measures things like blood pressure, metabolism, cholesterol, and body composition. The tour is only in town Monday and Tuesday.
The first holiday of the season is almost here and while you're getting ready for family to arrive, the Rogers Fire Department wants to prevent your holidays from going up in smoke. Captain Dusty Meredith says a lot of calls this time of year are cooking accidents: either forgotten food in the oven or grease fires from frying turkeys. A simple way to avoid those Thanksgiving Day disasters is to never leave cooking food unattended. One spill can cause a devastating fire. The best tip Captain Meredith says he can give is make sure your smoke detector is working.
If you're hitting the road this weekend, this is your warning: wear a seat-belt! Arkansas State Police is putting additional troopers on the highways to ensure you're buckled up. In 2010, 337 people were killed across the country during Thanksgiving weekend; more than half were not wearing their seatbelts. Not wearing your seatbelt is a primary offense and police can pull you over for not wearing it.
If you're taking to the skies, the Transportation Security Administration says its expecting more passengers than ever this season at XNA. TSA is projecting most will hit the tarmac on Tuesday and Wednesday. That's good news for the folks flying on Thanksgiving Day! But there's still about 300 more passengers than last year expected to fly out on turkey day. After all those family get-togethers, most folks will be coming back through XNA on Sunday the 25th.
You know the holidays are here when the switch gets flipped at the Lights of the Zzarks on the Fayetteville Square. Chief Meteorologist Dan Skoff got the festivities started Saturday night. Nearly half a million lights are bringing joy to many folks across our area. Some folks make the trek to Fayetteville just to check out the tradition that first started in 1993. The lights will stay lit until December 31st so you have plenty of time to hit the square and soak in the holiday season.
