Reported by: Liz Hogan Sunday, Jan 27, 2008 @07:59pm CST It's called RecycleMania 2008-- a competition involving hundreds of colleges across the nation. UA sustainability expert Nick Brown is hoping a little friendly competition will ingrain the words 'recycle, reduce, reuse' into students minds. Right now the campus recycles about 10 tons of waste a week... Brown wants to double that. "We think we can get up to about 20 tons a week through good public relations and a heightened awareness," he says. RecycleMania judges will also monitor how much solid waste each school produces. Brown says the university is working hard to make recycling easy and convenient for students and faculty. Sorted recycling bins are in place all over campus to encourage participation. The RecycleMania contest ties in with the university's recent commitment to pollution prevention and waste minimalization. "We're currently recycling about 30-percent of all our solids, that's a pretty good start. But the easy work has been done, our target is 45-percent by the year 2010 so we've got a lot of hard work left to do," Brown says. |
