Reported by: Liz Hogan Tuesday, Feb 5, 2008 @04:36pm CST With just a turn of the tap you can have as much water as you need at a fraction of the cost you'd pay for the bottled stuff. Hydrogeologist Van Brahana says it's clever marketing that has Americans spending extra money on what they 'think' is a safer product. "Marketing plays a big role...the fact of the matter is the tap water works, the tap water's fine," Brahana says. In fact, studies show more than 25-percent of bottled water comes from a municipal supply-- not a gurgling spring or untouched glacier. Then there's the cost to your pocket and the environment... "It costs a lot to package and market it, whereas we already have the infrastructure. The tap water is delivered through pipes that are already there, it's pennies per gallon for tap water vs a liter of bottled water is very expensive," Brahana says. More than 80-percent of those convenient bottles go straight into the trash, when many could be reused or recycled. Some easy alternatives to bottled water: using a filter for tap water or choosing glass bottles, which are easier to recycle. |
