Reported by: Doug Currin, Senior Reporter / Anchor Monday, Jan 21, 2008 @05:43pm CST America's mailboxes are exploding with unwanted catalogs, credit card offers and mailers. Truckloads come into post offices every day. Postal workers call it 'advertising mail,' but the rest of us simply call it 'junk.'
On a daily basis, advertising mail accounts for about 40% of the mail that comes into the facility. And it's all headed to our mailboxes! Billions of catalogs and junk mailers mean three and a half million tons of paper in our mailboxes. What's more, Americans aren't even recycling a third of it. That's more than 53 million trees being used each year to produce paper catalogs alone. It's actually pretty easy to get rid of all those catalogs you never ordered in the first place. Websites, like Catalogchoice.org will unsubscribe you - for free. Type in your name, address and simply click on the catalogs you no longer want. Similar sites, like The Direct Marketing Association's cost as little as a dollar. Go to DMAconsumers.org and click on "remove my name from those lists." If you want to put a stop to those preapproved credit card offers, just call 888-567-8688. Be patient because it could take at least a month for the "opt out" to take effect.
