  • Police Officers Take Caution During Routine Traffic Sto...
    Reported by: Shannon Miller

    Monday, Nov 2, 2009 @10:26pm CST

David Bassett remembers the first time he was pulled over like yesterday.

"I was doing about 45 in a 35 mile an hour and I probably was doing more than that too, Bassett said.

But Bassett hasn't been stopped in more than 25 years.

In fact, he's only gotten one traffic ticket in his entire life, part of why remembering exactly what to do if pulled over takes some thought.

"Stay in the vehicle you know, make sure the vehicle is in park."

The routine is something you may not always think about, but it's important because an officer approaching your car is watching everything.

"It's just a grab bag, you never know what you are going to get," Fayetteville Officer Jason Gilbert said.

And don't delay pulling over, because the longer it takes you to stop the more suspicious you make police.

"They just keep passing on in a different manner and places when they could safely pull over and that gets our minds to thinking that they're trying to hide something," Gilbert said.

And even when drivers do pull over immediately, Gilbert says he's well aware a routine traffic stop can quickly become a life and death situation

"I just never know what's in the car. You never know what's going on, " Gilbert said.

So what is the best routine when you see the blue lights flash in your rear-view mirror? First grab your keys and turn off the car. Next, put both hands on the steering wheel and keep them there. Finally, roll down your window to let officers know you're willing to work with them.

Even for drivers like Bassett with an almost perfect record, remembering these tips can make a traffic stop less painful for everyone.
