Reported by: Allison Woods, awoods@knwa.com Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @05:03pm CST Washington County proposes an ordinance which will mandate dogs picked up without a collar to have a microchip implanted.
The County Animal Concern Advisory board believes this will help animals find their way home and also save money for shelters. "It costs money to shelter animals, so in an economy like this every government is looking for ways to economize and at the same time protect the animals. So if my animal is picked up and it has a microchip, that officer will know it belongs to me," explains Lib Horn, Former Animal Shelter Superintendent. The board is also discussing an ordinance that if a dog is picked up by animal control a second time it will be spayed or neutered at the owner's expense. Both ordinances will be discussed at the board meeting on Thursday. |
