As students begin a new semester this week at the University of Arkansas, they're being greeted with emergency policies in light of recent school shootings.

The university required professors to include a new "Emergency Preparedness" section in their syllabi to inform students of the school's existing policies.

In the event of a shooting threat students are encouraged to call UAPD or dial 9-1-1, and then to evacuate the area.

If getting out isn't an option, the school recommends students barricade the door and defend themselves by throwing objects to distract or interrupt the gunman.

The university had a shooting of its own 12 years ago.

On the first day of classes in August of 2000, English Professor John Locke was shot and killed in his office in Kimpel Hall by a former graduate student, who then shot and killed himself.

James Easton Kelly was reportedly on a rampage against Locke and the committee denying him access to more graduate classes.

The school continues to honor John Locke's memory through a serenity garden in front of Kimpell Hall.
