Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus has successfully kicked off its participation in the 2013 RecycleMania tournament, a friendly eight-week competition in which college campuses across the country see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste.

In 2012, 605 participating colleges and universities recovered more than 92 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials, which prevented the release of nearly 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E), according to a RecycleMania release.

At Arkansas Tech-Ozark last year, 4,605 pounds of paper were recycled by students, faculty and staff, along with 3,752 pounds of cardboard and 852 pounds of aluminum and plastic - an average of 7.59 pounds per student.

RecycleMania was started in 2001 through a partnership between Keep America Beautiful, the Environmental Protection Agency's Wastewise program and the College and University Recycling Coalition.
