Teen's Newborn Leads to Arrest

A Springdale man has been arrested after telling police he fathered an underage girl's child.

According to police, they were called to Willow Creek Hospital in Johnson on Friday, March 15 in reference to a 14-year-old girl giving birth to a child. The suspected father, 19-year-old Jack Kelwan, was also at the hospital.

A State Police Investigator spoke to both Jack and the teen separately through interpreters because neither spoke English very well.

They each said they met at a Church in Springdale in 2011 and had been in a relationship since then.

Jack told police that after approximately a year into the relationship, they began having consensual sex. The girl told police there was no force used.

They both admitted to at least one sexual encounter that took place at the Electric Apartments in Springdale in the back seat of a vehicle that belonged to Kelwan's brother.

Police say Kelwan told them they snuck out approximately seven different times to have sexual intercourse together in that manner.

Kelwan also told police he was the father of the newborn.

Kelwan is being held in the Washington County Detention Center on one charge of sexual indecency with a child. He's scheduled to appear in court Friday morning for a preliminary hearing.
