Washington County officials were out surveying the damage Wednesday and spreading the word about a new notification system.

Judge Marilyn Edwards said Code Red was introduced just last March. It is a free service that sends out an alert to anyone in the path of a storm, and Edwards said 1,000 people received alerts Tuesday.

The notification can be sent via text or an actual phone call, and being prepared can make all the difference.

"It's always better to be safe than sorry... I just want to say how grateful I am that we did not have loss of lives last night. Houses can be fixed, property can be restored, lives cannot be," said Judge Edwards.

She said as many as 40 houses had some form of damage from the storm. To sign up for the free alert, call Washington County Emergency Services or the Washington County Courthouse.
