Lavaca Public Schools were on lockdown for a short time Thursday afternoon after there were reports of an armed man and woman trying to pick up two children in the parking lot.

Around 3:10p.m., during school pick-up, Lavaca Schools notified the Sebastian County Sheriffs Department about an armed man and woman in the parking lot in a white Crown Victoria car.

Shortly thereafter, a Central City Police Officer and Sebastian County deputies located the car on Highway 255 at Pierce Newman Street, says officials.

Police say that the car was stopped and a .22 caliber rifle, a .45 caliber handgun, and two knives were found in the car, along with $20,000 worth of methamphetamine.

Esteban Arreola, 29, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds. He was further charged with 2 counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deliver, and Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Firearms. He was also charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana, and Drinking on a Highway.

Vanessa Barrett, 26, was arrested and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia by the 12th/21st Drug Task Force.

Barrett is the mother of the children who the two were in line waiting to pick up the children.

Both were booked into the Sebastian County Detention Center.
