It may not look like it was much of a fire now...a few burned tires...some melted pick-up bed liners. But this fire and at least one other Tuesday in Springdale were caused by something as simple as sparks from a welders torch -- or a discarded cigarette butt.
Captain James Hales of the Springdale Fire Department says, "Usually throwing a cigarette out the window is not a big deal. But this time of year with the low humidity, dry conditions and warmer temperatures, it`s just a tinderbox out there."
This fire easily could have become much more serious -- only feet away from the flames were high pressure gas lines. If there had been a pile of leaves nearby or even a row of trees -- things might have taken a turn for the worse.
Firefighters say keeping debris and dry vegetation away from your home may save it if there is a grassfire in your neighborhood.
Captain Hales says, "Clean up the areas around your house. Get all the leaves and dry material away from your home. And keep watering your yard and bushes to keep the dry conditions at bay."
