Plans For a Fayetteville Temple On Hold

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Temple of Shalom members say the plan to create a place of worship out of this Fayetteville home seemed like a great idea. Their worship group is small and they would be able to invest in small improvements to preserve the property. But objection to the move is widespread in the neighborhood. Many residents even took out this add in a local paper calling attention to their concerns. Letters have flooded council members -- saying the creation of a synagogue in their neighborhood would be unsafe and even dangerous "It` not because it`s a synagogue, " Ward 1 Alderman Brenda Thiel says objections from the neighborhood are a result of the narrow streets and steep hill, and not any religious bigotry. Thiel says, "It`s a very narrow street, very poor visibility pulling out of that location. There`s no sidewalk. I just don`t think it is where I`d want to see mixed use."
