The Razorbacks' new coach is getting national media attention, but locally the buzz is even stronger, and sports talk radio hosts filled the airwaves with speculation about the team's future Wednesday.
Today's topic for the Lunch Special with Bobby Joe Edmonds was a no-brainer.
"We officially have a new Arkansas Razorback football coach in Brett Bielema," he says. "I think he's ready for the challenge, young, energetic exciting coach, so I think he's going to get the players here to be able to turn this program around."
Edmonds is a former Razorback, and played in the NFL for five years before returning to Northwest Arkansas for the radio gig.
"(There are) good people around here," he says. "I have great relationships, nice place to be, so Arkansas has been great to me in a lot of different ways."
But the nation hasn't been as kind to his Alma Mater.
"Arkansas over the last year has become kind of like a joke as far as national media is concerned, or people in general," he says.
But Edmonds believes coach Bielema will be able to resurrect the razorback's glory.
"Last year was a nightmare, so hopefully that chapter is over," he says. "Wake up, start a new day and move forward for brighter days."
He says with the right players, the hogs could be heading to the SEC championship within three years.
"There's gonna be a lot of guys on the team that are excited they have coach Bielema as the coach, and there are gonna be some guys who are gonna meet him and say maybe this might not be for me," he says. "Next year is just going to be a slow progression, year two another progression, so by year three you really want to start seeing some significant progress with this football team."
