Homeless camps may be an uncommon sight in Fayetteville, but that`s probably because you don`t know where to look. Off the beaten path, down a narrow trail leading into the woods is the camp of Cecil Day. He`s been homeless for about five years and lives with another homeless man in a small camp made up of tents, tarps and chairs. According to Day, there are at least fifteen separate camps around the city of Fayetteville. He says those camps are the only alternative for homeless men because, unless the temperature drops below freezing, there are no overnight shelters in Northwest Arkansas. A recent study by the University of Arkansas found that about 1200 homeless individuals live in the area. The study was conducted in an effort to realize the scope of the homeless problem. Now that the number is known, researchers hope more can be done to help those living without homes.
