"Many Arkansans did not know about the law. So we wanted to bring more attention to the law, because it's so unsafe for the child," said Dr. Carolyn Dresler, Director of the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program for the Arkansas Department of Health.

Most folks in Fayetteville said they had no idea Act 13 existed. But Dr. Dresler knows firsthand about the effects of second-hand smoke in cars.

"My dad smoked the whole time I was a kid. He'd hold his hand out the window, and all that. But no matter how much complaining I did that I could still smell it, just nothing. I don't think parents realize," she said.

Health officials say taking even a few drags while you drive can be dangerous because it only takes a few seconds for your car to become toxic.

"Within 15 -20 second toxic levels hit the backseat in your car when you smoke inside," Dresler pointed out.

Lighting up in a kid-filled car will start to cost you. It will be a $25 fine for the first offense. Local law enforcement is on the lookout for people puffing away with kids strapped in carseats. Because it's a primary offense, they can pull you over.

Dr. Dresler said strapping your kids in might keep them safe in a crash, but it won't help them escape the effects of second-hand smoke.
