Sebastian County Fire Burns Over 300 Acres

Updated: April 17, 2007
Sebastian County fire fighters contain a massive brush fire Sunday, but over 325 acres are burned. The fire erupted around 1 AM Sunday morning on Sugarloaf Mountain, south of Midland. Officials say the terrain has many rocky bluffs and that has made efforts difficult. Several local volunteer crews have been fighting the blaze and Arkansas` Forestry Commission has bulldozers creating fire lines. Officials say aircraft also dumped 6 loads of water and they have good control as of Sunday evening. No homes are in danger and they urge the public to be vigilant. Gary Lawrence, Arkansas Forestry Commission: "We`ve got 4 dozers from the Arkansas Forestry Commission along with 4 or 5 rural fire departments out here helping us and we`re trying to rotate them out." Tonya Roberts, Sebastian Co. Emergency Management: "We want to ask the public, be as safe as you can with your cigarettes, obviously no outdoor burning. We just can`t afford to lose any personel or property or lives." Officials say there is no known cause at this time.
