Freaky Friday

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Friday the 13th is a day meant to freak us all out... but why? And who`s buying into the hype? KNWA`s Alexa Hamblin sorts through the superstitions. The fear of Friday and the number 13 has deep roots, afterall, 13 people were in attendance at the Last Supper, and Christ was crucified on a Friday. The Stress Management and Phobia Institute says that American businesses lose 800 to 900 million dollars each Friday the 13th, because many people won`t travel or work on the spooky day. Could that be true? Maybe those who are concerned about the date stay home, because the people who were out and about in Northwest Arkansas today weren`t very superstitious. Some, like Arturo Carias, say they`re undecided, "I don`t throw salt over my shoulder, but if something feels bad to me, I stay away from it." Carias says a few superstitions, like don`t walk under a ladder, just make sense. "I think that`s a fairly common-sensed one," Carias says. "Something could fall on you -- like the ladder, or the person!" Others say when it comes to superstitious elements, like broken mirrors and black cats, it`s best not to take your chances. "I`m probably not going to climb any ladders, or accidentally break any mirrors today," explains Jenny Perkins, as friend Holly Denison chimes in, "Yeah, watch out for black cats." Many say folks use Friday the 13th to let it all hang out... "I think people can kind of be more crazy than usual, so they take that advantage to do things that are crazy," says Lindsey Meyer. Jeremy Bonham might agree, "I always kinda thought it`d be fun to throw a party on Friday the 13th, just to celebrate that day that everyone seems to dread!" Alexa Hamblin... for KNWA...
