It`s a cruel coincidence -- a local couple loses two family members to a house fire, and today they lost their home. KNWA`s Alexa Hamblin has the story.
It was their home for more than 20 years, now it`s gone. But what makes this family`s house fire especially devastating is the fact that they`ve lost more than just their home recently.
"We just got back from burrying my son, Wade, and my brother, Carol, and they burnt up in Wade`s house," explains Nadine Phillips.
On Tuesday, Nadine Phillips and her husband, Ben, buried their son and her brother. The men perished in a house fire in Lead Hill near Harrison.
Then around noon Thursday, in a terrible twist of fate, the couple lost their home to a fast-moving fire off of State Highway 45 in Cane Hill. Nadine Phillips, still mourning the loss of two family members, was visiting with friend and neighbor Marie Jenkins when they got a shocking call.
"We were sitting right here talking and stuff and her neighbor called and said that the Phillips` house was on fire," Nadine says, still in shock.
Nadine doesn`t even remember her initial reaction, but Marie said Nadine collapsed in the front yard when she saw flames bursting through every window in the newly-renovated home.
"I`m just numb, I`m just numb," Nadine says.
Firefighters had a tough time battling this blaze because of the strong winds. Multiple fire departments assisted in squelching the fire.
The fire marshal says the blaze began in the bedroom, but they still haven`t determined how it started. The fire is not considered suspicious.
