Leverett Elementary Remains Open

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
It was a capacity crowd and them some at tonight`s school board meeting. Plans for new attendance zones for the junior high schools and middle schools passed unanimously. But things slowed down when talk turned to the elementary schools. Board members spoke of the Leverett neighborhood and the limited opportunities for residential growth. Some were convinced Leverett`s attendance will drop -- causing the district to disrupt the transportation plans for the rest of the schools to keep enough student in the building. But projections that the remaining eight elementary schools would soon fill to capacity if Leverett closed were cause to reconsider. Susan Purtle was happy with the decision, "Leverett is such a fantastic school. We love it. And I really think it`s going to benefit Fayetteville. It was a great decision. It really took a lot of courage for all the board members, but I think it was the right decision." Kim Vollendforf has one child in Leverett, "We just moved to that school district a year ago. Leverett had such wonderful qualities that we were drawn to. it`s a shame to close a school when you have a growing population."
