Benton County Labor Dispute Continues After 6 Months But End is in Sight

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Nearly 30 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers formed a picket line Saturday on Walton Boulevard. The target of their aggression was Landers McLarty Ford and Jeep Dealership. 13 Auto technicians walked off the job back in July. They demanded safer working conditions, better health benefits, and most importantly recognition of their union. So why after 6 months are they still striking? The technicians say a January court date was cancelled concerning a recent election. They`ll appeal and strike until a final decision is made. Mark Ward, Striking Technician: "The employer doesn`t think that much or doesn`t respect the professional thats out there working on the vehicles. We`re the only trained professionals in the building." Landers McLarty hired replacements. Federal law gives them that right. The dealer also held a September election to see if employees truly desired union representation. 6 votes were cast for the union, 3 against but 16 have been challenged due to voter eligibilty. The National Labor Relations Board office in Memphis has since reviewed the case. George Newcomb, General Manager Landers-McLarty: "The regional director of the labor board dismissed most of the complaints and we have settled the rest. We regret any inconvenience to our customers." Striking members say they will appeal again to the NLRB and they say the strike isn`t going away. Ward: "We`ll continue to stay out here to picket as long as it takes. If it takes two years, we`ll be out here two years." A little Rock Attorney representing the dealership says an appeal decision could come within 30 days. He says Landers McLarty hasn`t lost any business. And all the replacement technicians are qualified employees with over 300 years of combined training.
