Despite winning approval for a conditional use permit from the Fayetteville Planning Commission last month, a Jewish congregation may not get to buy their dream synagogue.
The Temple Shalom wants to turn the E. Fay Jones Butterfly house, that`s sat vacant for years, into a synagogue, but members of the North Sequoyah Neighborhood Association are opposed to the idea. They plan to appeal the already-approved permit at the Fayetteville City Council`s February 21st meeting. Temple Shalom President Joe Ratner says he`s suprised and disappointed by the opposition, and hopes those who think his congregation has right a right to worship in the home will speak up.
Ratner says, "I`d like to encourage everyone who supports the Jewish community to contact their aldermen and the Mayor and most importantly, attend the city council meeting on the 21st."
A spokesperson for the neighborhood association did not return our calls.
