Fire Frenzy in Northwest Arkansas

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
The blue skies were a nice change from last weekends snowy weather, but todays conditions were unfortunately ideal for grassfires. KNWA`S Meghan Dill has the report. Firefighters in both Washington and Benton Counties were busy today battling blazes because of the extreme dry conditions and high winds. Mike Traylor watched his chicken house full of hay burn down. Firefighters said the adjoining property owner was burning trash and it got out of control. Traylor said, ‘I`ll have to tear it down and build me another barn and buy me some hay." Traylor said this will cost him at least fifty thousand dollars, but this is just one of the many fires around Washington County Sunday. Grass fires were blazing everywhere from Goshen to Prairie Grove, the product of extremely dry conditions. Washington County Corporal Steven Hulsey said, "The lack of moisture on the grounds makes everywhere extremely dry." Both Washington and Benton Counties saw their fair share of snow last weekend, but the moisture level remains really low. Between noon and eight oclock Sunday, Washington County firefighters fought over 14 brush fires. There is currently no burn ban. The dangerous combination of weather conditions is causing both Washington and Benton Counties to be under a red flag warning tomorrow, starting at noon.
