Possible Changes for College Avenue

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
College Avenue here in Fayetteville is one of the major corridors, but Mayor Dan Coody says its also a major eyesore. KNWA`s Meghan Dill reports. Mayor Coody wants to make College Avenue an attraction in Fayetteville, much like Dickson Street is now. Coody says the run down buildings and empty parking lots are doing nothing for Fayettevilles economy. The mayor wants to make more use out of an acre of land and bring in more businesses. In order to attract economic growth, Mayor Coody says there needs to be more trees and sidewalks for pedestrians to enjoy. "We`ve got to do something to make it more civil for people to live in Fayetteville and College Avenue needs to become a main street." There is no definite decision on how they will improve traffic, but Mayor Coody says there needs to be something done so that when a driver needs to turn off the College Ave., they are not holding up an entire lane of traffic. We spoke to some business owners who have mixed emotions about the possible changes, but Mayor Coody says the cities intention is to increase business. Mayor Coody says the project could cost up to six million dollars.
