Ambulance Crews Need Help From Drivers

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
"We were running lights and sirens and they just didn`t yield like they were supposed to." Doug McCratic has seen his share of close calls in his five years with Central EMS. Most of them cause by the same thing. McCratic says, "Typically it`s not yielding the right direction or not yielding properly. They pull to the right and continue to move instead of stopping like they`re supposed to." In reality, the lights and sirens are just to alert drivers. Then drivers must act. Lt. Stewart Jones of Central EMS says, "We have no right to the right of way. It`s a request for the right of way. We stop at stop signs. We stop at red lights. Because we don`t have the right of way until it`s yielded." Doug says he loves his job. He`s there for people when they really need help. And with a little help from other drivers... McCratic says, "I`ll get home safe for the night."
