breaking news
If you know anything about TV news, you may know that it can be a hard business to break into -- but for some local high school students, determination and hard work could lead to a dream job. KNWA`s Alexa Hamblin has their story.
Nearly 30% of teenagers in the U.S. watch Channel One News in their classrooms each day, now two Springdale students will have a hand in creating the content of the popular show.
If you have attended high school in the last ten years or so, you have probably heard of Channel One News.
Springdale High School student Emily Slezak explains, "Channel One is a nation-wide news program that`s catered to teens, so it`s almost like MTV meets KNWA."
It`s a news program by teens for teens that reaches more than seven million teenagers in middle schools and high schools around the country, and, at the end of March, two Springdale students are joining the ranks.
"So, I actually get to shadow the executive producer for Channel One for a week, and the following week, I actually get to work as executive producer for the show," Rusty Davis says excitedly.
Emily Slezak and Rusty Davis are key players in Bulldog Television, Springdale High School`s own TV news program that airs on campus and in Springdale homes -- now they will get the opportunity to do what they love on the national level.
"It`s the big time," Emily says confidently, "It`s a big deal."
Emily and Rusty will fly to L.A. and spend two weeks learning and working -- Rusty as the show`s executive producer, and Emily as a news producer.
Jo Ray, instructor for Bulldog Television details Emily`s position, "She`ll have a team of a reporter and photographer and they`ll fly her anywhere in the country she wants to go to get that story."
As you can imagine, this is a huge honor. We`re told Channel One has never before chosen two students from the same school for this opportunity. After sending application tapes, Rusty and Emily were two of just fifteen selected for the program out of thousands of students from around the U.S.
For KNWA... Northwest Arkansas news... I`m Alexa Hamblin.
