As most people know, benton county continues to grow quickly, and Bentonville is no exception. Today marks the start of the city`s special census.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Bentonville had an estimated population of over nineteen-thousand. Over the past six years city officials project the population has grown by about eight-thousand people.
Bentonville`s special census office hires local people to help conduct the survey. This year they`ve hired about sixty people. Census workers go door-to-door asking residents various questions.
The census cost the city almost four-hundred thousand dollars to conduct, but city officials say if Bentonville has really grown to around twenty-eight thousand people, the city could see turnback funds of almost half-a-million dollars.
Turnback funds the city receives from the census will be divided into general and street funds.
Bentonville Mayor Terry Coberly says she wants every house to count and encourages residents to participate in the census.
The census should take about four to six weeks to complete.
