We saw some big deals Monday morning -- with Lucent agreeing to a merger with Alcatel, and GM deciding to sell a majority of the GMAC financing unit.
Economic figures showed a slow-down in the manufacturing sector and more construction spending -- then investors cashed in.
The Dow added +35.62 (+0.32%) to close at 11,144.94. The NASDAQ lost -3.05 (-0.13%) to finish at 2,336.74 and the S&P 500 added +2.99 (+0.23%) to finish at 1,297.81.
Local stocks almost split the session. Tyson Foods (TSN) added +0.22% to close at $13.77. JB Hunt (JBHT) added +2.14% to finish at $22.00. Acxiom (ACXM) lost -0.08% to finish at $25.82. Wal-Mart (WMT) lost -0.99% to close at $46.77 and AllTel lost -0.23% to close at $64.60.
We`ll have no economic data from the government today -- we also have no major earnings reports to follow this morning.
Overseas in Asia, the Nikkei gained 8.98 points to reach 17,342.29 at the mid-day break in Tokyo. The broader Topix added +2.03 (+0.1%) to reach 1,756.67. Back in the U.S., in extended hours trading, the NASDAQ 100 Afterhours Indicator rose +0.10 (+0.1%) to close the night at 1,706.87.
