The big news that had investors excited came from Citigroup, the world`s largest bank, which learned from federal regulators it could start looking into plans for expansion. Also, Computer Sciences, Inc. put itself up for sale.
That must have done the trick -- the Dow gained +59.91 (+0.53%) to close at 11,203.85. The NASDAQ added +8.62 (+0.37%) to close at 2,345.36 and the S&P 500 added +8.12 (+0.63%) to finish at 1,305.93.
Local stocks posted mostly negative numbers. Tyson Foods (TSN) lost -0.58% to close at $13.69. JB Hunt (JBHT) added +0.95% to close at $22.21. Acxiom (ACXM) lost -0.66% to finish at $25.65. Wal-Mart (WMT) lost -0.58% to close at $46.50 and AllTel (AT) lost -0.77% to finish at $64.10.
In terms of economic numbers today -- we`ll see two. First, we`ll get a look at the March ISM Services numbers -- we`ll also see crude oil inventories for the week behind.
Overseas in Asia last night , the Nikkei gained +137.18 (+0.8%) to reach 17,430.09 at the mid-day break in Tokyo, and the broader Topix gained 16.61 (+1%) to reach 1,766.26. Back in the U.S., in extended hours trading, the NASDAQ 100 Afterhours Indicator rose +0.28 (+0.02%) to close the night at 1,716.83.
