Library Movies Raise Concern

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
Two complaints were recently turned in claiming some of the movies are inappropriate. The movie selection at the Springdale library is not sectioned, so all the movies are lumped together. Some patrons feel they are being caught off guard. Both Emerald Forest and Songcatcher were called into question. One of the complaints says Emerald Forest was promoting child pornography. The nude scenes involving children are of an indigenous tribe in the rainforest. The other movie, Songcatcher, bothered Michelle Jordan. Jordan says the homosexual theme caught her off guard. ""I know we cant take things off the shelf, but I dont want to pretend that movie is for the family" While Jordan understands she wont agree with all the movies, she feels they should be screened more carefully. Both movies were reviewed by the library board and were deemed appropriate for the shelves. The library director says all their movies are rated, and it`s up to their patrons to check on the movie label and decide whether it`s appropriate for them. Emerald Forest and Songcatcher are back into rotation.
