We saw strong earnings numbers from the world`s largest bank -- Citigroup -- which didn`t do much to provide a counterweight to oil and gold. Oil went up $1.08 a barrel, closing at $70.40 on Nymex. Gold stayed up near a 25-year high point.
The Dow lost -63.87 (-0.57%) to close at 11,073.78. The NASDAQ lost -14.95 (-0.64%) to close at 2,311.16 and the S&P 500 lost -3.79 (-0.29%) to finish at 1,285.33.
Local stocks posted mixed numbers. Wal-Mart (WMT) added +0.11% to close at $45.82. AllTel (AT) lost -0.35% to close at $64.95. Tyson Foods (TSN) added +0.69% to close at $13.17. JB Hunt (JBHT) added +6.42% to close at $22.88 and Acxiom (ACXM) lost -0.34% to finish at $26.06.
Today we`ll see March building permits and housing starts. Also out today, the March Producer Price Index. We`ll also see the minutes of the March 28th meeting of the Fed today.
Overnight in Asia, the Nikkei gained +124.86 (+0.7%) to reach 17,125.22 at the mid-day break in Tokyo. The broader Topix added +10.43 (+0.6%) to reach 1,729.48.
Back in the U.S., in extended hours trading, the NASDAQ 100 Afterhours Indicator rose +2.03 (+0.12%) to close at 1,696.35.
