170 Year Old Debt Paid Off

By:
Updated: April 17, 2007
It took nearly 170 years to pay off, but the debt of a Marion County man has been paid off. In 1836, Archibald Yell told the leaders of Shawneetown that he would pay them $50 to re-name the town after him. They did, and current day Yellville was born. However, Yell never paid the money. Yell`s great-great-great nephews were researching family history when they found out about the debt. They recently paid off the debt to Yellville, and the mayor was even kind enough to waive off interest, which would have been about $803,000.
