Fayetteville police say a drunk driver is responsible for hitting three pedestrians. The accident happened around 2:00 Sunday morning at the intersection of West Avenue and Dickson Street.
Three people, Michael Lewis of Springdale, and Jennifer Tankersley and Keith Sowinski, both of Tulsa, were standing on the sidewalk in front of Hog Haus waiting to cross West Avenue. Police say a car tried to turn from the eastbound lane of Dickson onto West Avenue and hit the three pedestrians.
Claire Tennyson was there when it happened. "Three people were standing, waiting to cross the street, and as they were standing there, a gold Grand-am came down Dickson, and without a turn signal, jumped the curb and took out three people."
Tennyson says she and her friends were standing less than 50 feet from the three people when she heard a loud noise. "I heard the car jump the curb, but it must have been the car hitting the people because they were on the ground really quick and screaming. Youre kind of disoriented because you dont know... I saw this car, I heard music, and then I heard a loud noise and saw the people... I didnt know what to think."
He tried to flee, but police were able to stop and arrest 20-year-old Joshua Jones of Bentonville. Jones was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a DWI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended/revoked license, and an improper turn.
Arpan Agarwal was also at the scene. "The next think I know we heard this big noise up there. We saw three people get hit right up here... they jumped the curb-- it was messed up. Theyre lucky there was an officer nearby and they caught him right down the street with a road block."
And Agarwal says after witnessing the accident he`s glad everyone was okay, but he also says it could have been worse. "We could have walked out of the bar a little bit earlier and it could`ve been us."
