Lorillard Tobacco Co. has agreed to implement new measures to prevent the illegal sale of its cigarettes over the Internet and through the mail. These protocols are being adopted nationwide and voluntarily by Lorillard under an agreement reached with 33 Attorneys General across the country. A similar agreement was reached with Philip Morris USA in January.
Under the terms of the agreement, Lorillard will terminate shipments of cigarettes to customers found to be engaging in illegal Internet and mail order sales. The company will also reduce sales to customers found to be engaged in illegal resale of the products, and the company will suspend incentive programs for any retailer who engages in illegal sales.
Lorillard Tobacco manufactures cigarettes under Kent, Maverick, Max, Newport, Old Gold, Satin and True brands.
The attorneys general believe almost all Internet cigarette sales are illegal because they violate state and federal laws including state age verification laws.
