It`s a hot debate, embryonic stem cell research. Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln is actually a co-sponsor of the legislation called, The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.
Lincoln said, "We want to make sure we deal with the issue of stem cell research in a morally and ethical way."
The bill will allow for federal funding on embryonic stem cells, but only those that would otherwise be thrown away. Both Arkansas gubernatorial candidates, Asa Hutchinson and Mike Beebe made a stop in Fayetteville Tuesday morning, and commented on the controversial bill.
Beebe said, "I generally support proper research and understand weve already got enough stem cells in storage to last forever and ever."
Hutchinson said, "I dont support the use of taxpayers money for embryonic research"
President Bush, who supported limited funding for existing stem cell lines in 2001, is expected to make his first ever veto as President, on this bill. Bush is opposed to federal funds going towards the destruction of embryos.
Senator Lincoln hopes this bill, if passed, will bring new hope to those suffering from diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinsons and spinal cord injuries.
If the president does in fact veto the embryonic stem cell research measure, it`s believed the House does not have enough votes to override it.
