Now fans are now waiting anxiously to hear athletic director Jeff Long's decision on Petrino's future.
"I'm devastated, like most of the people in the state are," says Teddy Woods, but feels fortunate that Long is at the reins. "It's clear to me he will use every sense of fairness in determining how the university is going to handle this."
Student Cameron McCauley isn't sure Petrino's actions should be forgiven.
"I know he's a good coach and everything, but maybe they should get everything right," he says. "It's kind of confusing that he would still be here."
But many fans don't want to see the coach go.
"Let's face it, we all have skeletons in our closet that we don't want to talk about," says David Stein. "Yeah he should be punished maybe, not to the point that he loses his job. In my opinion he's the best college coach out there."
Student Ray Clark is disappointed by the coach's "inapropriate relationship" with a 25 year old, and that Petrino lied about it.
"He shouldn't be doing that, he should be a role model for us," Clark says. "At least he came out with it in the end, and still told the truth but I would have told somebody from the beginning."
However, Clark doesn't want to lose the head hog.
"I hope he stays here," Clark says. "I like him as a coach, personally, in his personal life that's a different story but as a coach he's a really great coach."
