83rd Anniversary of Only Arkansas EF5 Tornado

Today marks the 83rd anniversary of the only F5 tornado on record in Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, late on the afternoon of April 10, 1929, the twister hit northern Jackson county.  It has come to be known as the Sneed Tornado, named after one of the most affected towns. It killed 23 and injured 59 others.

This historic Arkansas tornado was one of several that struck that day.

The NWS report says because storm surveys weren't done back then, it was hard to tell where the damage from one twister stopped and another began.

The Pleasant Valley community used to be located along what is now Jackson County Road 72. The Pleasant Valley School was located near the tree to the left of the road, with the school destroyed by the F5 tornado on April 10, 1929.
