Updated: April 17, 2007
A former Wal-Mart executive was sentenced Friday in a federal court. In January, Tom Coughlin pleaded guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion. Friday Judge Robert Dawson sentenced Coughlin to 27 months of house arrest and a 50,000 dollar fine. Dawson ordered Coughlin to pay more than 400,000 dollars in restitution to Wal-Mart and the IRS. Coughlin will begin his home arrest sentence in 60 days and he has 30 days to pay Wal-Mart and the IRS. In a statement after his sentencing, Coughlin apologized for the stress he caused on his Wal-Mart family and wished them the best of luck in the future. Wal-Mart has filed suit against Coughlin. Prosecutors say Coughlin will probably loss his retirement in that suit.
