Cody joined the KNWA / FOX 24 Storm Spotter Team in 2008. Born in
Harrison and raised in Jasper, Cody graduated from Jasper High School
2003.
Cody loves amateur astronomy, photography and weather since his childhood
and has been spotting storms since 2005. He spent a stint in the US Army as a Cavalry
Scout stationed with 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany. Cody is currently a volunteer with the National Park Service
doing Search and Rescue, along with high angle and swift water rescues.
He's looking forward to finishing his associates degree in Geographical Information
Systems (GIS) and Cartography.
"I have worked hard in making my storm spotting and weather
familiarity high. I have been a National Weather Service (NWS)
certified storm spotter since 2005, and completed advanced storm
spotting a few years later. My tools of the trade
include mobile internet, current mobile radar information, ham radio (KF5HLZ), and the NWSchat instant
messaging service. Ham radio
has proven time and time again to be the most valuable tool in my box
for severe weather. I will continue to educate myself to understand severe
weather better, along with forecasting and radar interpretation."
His most memorable storm chases include the two Branson, Missouri
tornadoes; December 30-31, 2010 and the EF2 that cut a path right
through the strip (Hwy 76) February 29, 2012. "On May 10th, 2010 in
Arkansas
City, KS myself and three other storm chasers
ended up in a ditch, because we decided to turn around to get out of the
tornado's path. The truck went over the lip of the road into the
ditch, so we had to ride it out for a minute while filming. It was quite
an
experience. I've chased many storms over the
years from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and
Iowa, and of course Arkansas. Look for me out in the field, spotting storms when they threaten our area."
