Golf In The Gulf Mon, Aug 14th, 2006

A couple of villagers got an idea about a noble recycling program. Everyday golfers on Bella Vista courses lose dozen of balls and wear out clubs. Ron Downs and Andy Pierce got an idea. Send the used balls and drivers to soldiers fighting in Iraq. The guys work at the Scotsdale Course in Bella VIsta. They have already gathered 100 clubs and about 17,000 golf balls. Two-thirds of the equipment will be sent to soldiers in the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade. Soldiers from Northwest Arkansas serve in the 142nd. Support The Troops NWA will ship the equipment with basic goods they send periodically. Director David Williams says it cost about a dollar per pound to shipping goods overseas. People who want to help out can donate golf equipment or pitch in a few bucks for shipping by calling Andy Pierce at (479) 855-2685. Pierce will can stop by and pick up the equipment. There are also drop off points at local Wal-Mart and Arvest locations. For more information about those, log on to the Support The Troops NWA website.
