KNWA spoke with Fayetteville Mayor Dan Coody today about a project called the Fayetteville Expressway Development Corridor. He says its their way of trying to make driving safer and more efficient in Fayetteville.
Coody said, "You can drive on the piece of interstate but you cant get to the mall without having to go up and around the world to get to it."
Mayor Dan Coody is talking about the Fulbright Expressway, which connects interstate 540 over to 71B, just south of the mall. He says many drivers take it to get to what the city refers to as their economic corridor which generates about 40 percent of Fayettevilles income.
Mayor Coody credits his many trips to Washington DC for a 9.7 million dollar federal grant to help fund connecting streets, all Fayetteville has to do is come up with 2 million of its own. Mayor Coody hopes this money will come from the bond issue Fayetteville residents will vote on September 12. Either way, he says they will find the money. "We cant turn away a 9.7 million dollar grant just because we cant come up with two million dollars. We need to find the way."
