The expansion will also "re-orient" the hospital toward Towson Avenue, one of Fort Smith`s busiest thoroughfares. The estimated cost of the expansion is just over $40 million.
The new Emergency/Critical Care Center will serve as the new home of an expanded 35-bed Emergency Center, as well as an intensive care unit, a surgery suite, a central registration area and a new public entrance.
The Emergency Department currently treats more than 50,000 patients per year and accounts for about 52 percent of all of Sparks` admissions.
The new Emergency Department will be named the Boreham Emergency Center in honor of former Sparks Board Member Roland S. "Rollie" Boreham Jr., who died in February. Boreham co-chaired the Sparks Capital Campaign Leadership Task Force and personally gave more than $3 million.
