Brandon Sanders is on trial for the first degree murder of his girlfriend April Love last year.
Investigators say after Sanders suffocated love to death, he wrapped her body in bedding and locked her in her apartment bedroom.
The trial began Wednesday morning with jury selection.
The attorneys picked seven woman and five men.
The prosecution began opening arguments with a picture of April Love and telling the jury about her life. Love was enrolled in the University of Arkansas Honors College, an active sorority member, and an internship in Washington DC.
The defense acknowledges Love and Sanders dated about three years, and that the relationship had its ups and downs, but that they chose one another and made life long plans together.
So far the defense hasn`t denied sanders involvement in love`s death, but they do claim it wasnt in the first degree. Saying Loves body was found lovingly tucked in her bed.
Corporal Robin Fields was the first witness on the stand. He is the Fayetteville police officer that was first on the scene. Fields told the jury when he entered April Love`s apartment it smelt like decaying flesh. Then, when he entered Loves room and picked up the comforter, he says he could see a body wrapped in sheets so tightly, much like a mummy.
Quite a few of Loves friends also took the stand. They talked about how Love was really outgoing and always a fun person to be around. They all say love didnt really mention her boyfriend, Brandon Sanders.
Most of the friends say they only met Sanders once or twice, and when they did, he was extremely quiet.
Love`s best friend told the jury the last time she saw Love, Love told her she needed to talk to her about something. Something her best friend never got a chance to hear.
