The utilities cooperative says member have been getting bogus calls from people posing as customers service reps. The person on the line tells the consumer that their electricity is about to be shut off. To avoid being disconnected the consumer is told to purchase a Green Dot Money Card from local businesses that sell these cards. After they purchase the card for the designated amount, they are to phone 1-800-877-8901 and give the serial number on the card to the caller so that the cash payment the consumer made can be retrieved by the caller.
The company says calls like these are fraudulent.
"Ozarks Electric never makes such calls and never requires members to purchase a third party card to make payments on their accounts. Any member who is contacted by phone and asked to make payment with the Green Dot Money Card should call their local law enforcement authorities immediately!"
A similar scam warning went out from Carroll Electric back in July. READ MORE HERE.
