Wal-Mart is calling their new attendance policy a positive change, wanting to better serve its customers by making sure their employees are accountable for coming to work.
They added a 1-800 number for employees to call in and report whether they will be tardy or absent. According to the giant retailer this will make the process smoother.
Wal-Mart spokesman John Simley told us, "We have an opportunity to formalize and better enforce the existing attendance policy to ensure greater consistency and minimize any subjectivity. It`s really designed to improve the working environment and shopping experience."
Wal-Mart told us if they have an absent employee and the store in unaware, then there is no service in that employees section. This way, the 1-800 number quickens the process and alerts the store manager in an efficient way.
Wal-Mart is also formalizing the tardiness rule. Employees now have a ten minute window before they are considered tardy and given an incomplete shift.
