Fayetteville is helping out the feral cat population by adopting a new ordinance allowing non-profits to come in and save the wild animals.

Right now, when feral cats are captured, they are usually euthanized.

But this new ordinance offers another outlet for feral felines.

Now cat caretakers can establish feral cat communities, saving so many of these animals from being put down.

"Its just opening a door for hopefully in the future we can start to deal with feral cats in a little more humane way.  Because our policy of trapping and euthanizing isn't really making a dent in the feral cat population in Fayetteville," says Justine Lentz, the Superintendent of Fayetteville Animal Services.

The neuter-trap-release program does not mean the city will be neutering feral cats. Lentz says the budget just isn't available to put towards the feral population.

As of now, no groups have come forward with a plan for a feral cat colony.
