A Bentonville teenager's condition has improved after being hit by a school bus on Thursday.

A spokesperson for St. John's Medical in Springfield said her status has been upgraded from critical to serious as of Monday.

According to school officials, the female Bentonville High School student was hit by the bus while crossing the street near the intersection of Southwest 14th and P Streets. It happened around 4:00 p.m.  It was a Bentonville school bus that was involved in the accident.

The student was taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Police said the girl's injuries are life-threatening.

According to officers and school officials, counselors were on hand for students on Friday and the investigation is ongoing.

Bentonville Superintendent Michael Poore says the bus driver has been suspended with pay pending the investigation, which is school policy.
