Jazz Trio Teaches History Lesson

By: Kyle Leyenberger
Updated: October 8, 2012
A jazz trio taught Northwest Arkansas Community College students about the history of jazz through the music itself Monday.

The students are learning about the Great Gatsby, so their teacher invited the Claudia Burson Trio to campus so students could hear the music of the time played live. The show started with music from 1915, and covered jazz styles all the way through current times.

"It's a really great opportunity to share the music and to really interact with folks who may or may not have an opportunity to hear live professionally performed jazz," says drummer Steve Wilkes.

In between songs, the musicians talked about jazz history and how the different styles influenced culture at the time.
