Selling Ties and Scarves, to Fund Cancer Research

A University of Arkansas professor has discovered an unusual way to get funding for his cancer research.
David Zaharoff, assistant professor and holder of the Twenty-First Century Endowed Professorship, is developing ways to help the body fight cancer.
He does this by combining proteins called cytokines, which produce an immune response, with a substance called chitosan, which can release these substances slowly anywhere in the body.
Zaharoff said this approach trains the immune system and works like a vaccine.
He is working with the National Cancer Institute on the project.
Zaharoff's currently conducting pre-clinical studies, which can be very expensive, so he's partnered up with something called the Life Tie Project.
The organization raises money for cancer research by selling ties and scarves.
